Abstract

Modern automated physical security systems rely on interconnected sensors to monitor conditions and changes in the physical environment. Reliable system operation depends on sensor availability, the trustworthiness of the acquired data, and the relevance of each information source to the function being performed. This paper presents a conceptual model for maintaining limited functionality under partial sensor failure by assessing the functional suitability of the available sensor configuration. The resulting assessment is used to determine the permissible level of automation, while an anomaly indicator is introduced to account for unusual combinations of events.
